RALEIGH, N.C. -

A man previously named a person of interest in a fatal shooting in Linden was shot to death early Sunday morning about a block from a downtown Raleigh nightclub.

Police say 26-year-old Vernon "Bam Bam" O'Neal Jones Jr., of Lillington, was shot multiple times in a parking lot at the corner of West Hargett and South West streets. Jones was transported to WakeMed where he later died from his injuries.

"It was about six or seven pops, like really rapid," recalled Heath Nixon, who lives nearby where the shooting occurred. "It was [loud] enough that I was sleeping and it woke me up."

Police say Jones is suspected of having left Club Bodi, located at 310 S. West St., following a "disturbance" at the club shortly before the victim was located.

It was not immediately clear what sort of "disturbance" may have occurred inside the nightclub.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page, Club Bodi said it had nothing to do with the shooting, and attributed the "disturbance" to a "faulty piece of the club's internal sound equipment."

"No one was shot or injured inside Club Bodi last night," the club posted on Facebook. "The loud pop that was heard was due to a faulty piece of the club's internal sound equipment.

"There was an earlier shooting that took place on the 200 block of West St. that is approximately two city blocks north of Club Bodi. Although these acts are extremely rare, we still want to take the time and send our thoughts and prayers out to the victim's friends and family. We also want to thank all of our customers for their continued support."

Jones was previously named a person of interest in connection with the March 25 fatal shooting of Dwayne Sawyer in Linden. It was not immediately clear if Jones was still considered a person of interest in that case.

Police say other club patrons likely witnessed events related to the shooting, and those people are urged to contact police with any information. Anyone with information that might assist the investigation of the case should call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at (919) 834-4357.

In August 2013, two people were shot at Club Bodi. Michael Adolphe Cadet was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon serious injury in connection with those shootings.
