15 more nabbed as NC coastal crackdown on pills continues

NEWPORT, NC - “Operation Pill Crusher” is still going on and now another 8 people are behind bars in Carteret County during week three of the operation.

Sheriff Asa Buck and District Attorney Scott Thomas held a news conference two weeks ago to report on the first round of the undercover drug operation called “Operation Pill Crusher.”

Just before Memorial Day weekend, 7 people were busted -- as well as the 8 announced Friday.

The operation is an effort to target criminal suspects who have been engaged in the illegal sales and diversion of prescription medication and other illegal drugs in Carteret County.

Those charged in phases 2 and 3  of “Operation Pill Crusher” include:

Melvin Joseph Morris AKA “Joe Norvey”
Age 56
- 2 counts - Trafficking opium or heroin
- 1 count - Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, & deliver Schedule II controlled substances
- 1 count - Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver schedule IV controlled substances
- Bond $100,000.00

Jerry Charles Jackson Sr.
Age 59
- 4 counts - Possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana
- 2 counts – maintaining vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substances
- Bond $10,000.00

Katherine Marie Gaskill
Age 35
- 1 count – Conspiracy to sell and deliver
schedule VI controlled substances
- Bond $30,000.00

Amanda Megan Girard
Age 26
- 1 count – Conspiracy to sell and deliver schedule II controlled substances
- 1 count - Conspiracy to sell and deliver schedule III controlled substances
- 1 count - Maintaining vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substances
- Bond $5,000.00

Ashley Bruce Hopewell
Age 52
- 2 counts - Possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana

• 1 count – Sell of Deliver Marijuana
• 1 count – Conspiracy to sell and deliver schedule VI controlled substances

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office worked in coordination with D.A. Scott Thomas’ office reviewing criminal histories and prior criminal activity on the targeted suspects. Police say many of the targeted offenders have extensive criminal records as well as prior drug conviction and previous probationary sentences.

Sheriff Asa Buck said previously the arrests are just the beginning and over the next several weeks a significant number of additional arrests will be made.
