Family makes video explaining transformation of transgender child

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO - A California family recently shared their story of their deaf daughter who proclaimed she was a boy as soon as he could speak.

The Whittington family posted a video on YouTube about their first child, Ryland, who was fitted with cochlear implants around Ryland's first birthday. They helped Ryland learn to hear and speak.

"As soon as Ryland could speak, she would scream, 'I am a boy!'" according to the video.

The couple said they thought it was a tomboy phase, but Ryland was persistent. They did some research and the Whittington family said they came to terms with Ryland being transgender. They said after discovering nearly half of transgender people have attempted suicide due to lack of societal acceptance, they were not willing to take that risk.

So Ryland got a hair cut and started dressing like a boy and they redecorated his room. The Whittingtons also sent letters to family and friends explaining the change. They said of course some people don't understand.

His parents said on the video, "Relative to the horrific things people have to endure with their children all over the world, this is nothing."
