RALEIGH, N.C. - Raleigh City Council is evaluating the possibility of charging to park in city-owned decks in downtown Raleigh on nights and weekends.

City-owned parking decks are currently complimentary on weekends and between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays. City parking staff, however, say that's a missed opportunity for up to $1 million a year in revenue.

On Monday, staff presented a revenue projection should the city charge a flat fee of $5 to park in its decks on weekends and weekday night.

Because decks are often full on nights and weekends, city parking staff estimates the city could generate between $900,000 and $1 million per year if it charged the proposed flat fee.

"Nobody jumped on the bandwagon and said, 'Oh, this is something we need to do right now.'" City Councilor Mary-Ann Baldwin said of the proposal.  "But next year we might have some financial realities that force us to look at it."

Last week, Governor Pat McCrory signed a bill that repeals some business and municipal taxes, including a tax the city of Raleigh charges businesses to operate within city limits.

City of Raleigh spokeswoman Jayne Kirkpatrick said no decision has been made and councilors are only evaluating the possiblity of charging for deck use on nights and weekends as a revenue source.

McLaurin Parking Company manages the city's parking facilities and customer accounts. During operating hours, most of the downtown decks are free to park for the first 15 minutes, and then charge $1 for each 30 minutes up to a maximum of $12.
