HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. -
North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are working to clear rocks and other debris as a portion of Interstate 40 is closed.

The highway closed at 4:00 a.m. from Exit 20 in Haywood County to Exit 451 in Tennessee. NCDOT officials say the interstate will remain closed until late Thursday night as crews work near the scene of last week's rock slide between the 7 and 8 mile markers.

Only local traffic only will be allowed on I-40 between exits 15 and 20. The closing of the highway into extends about a mile into Tennessee from the border with North Carolina.

A detour is in place to help drivers while that part of the interstate is closed. Motorists traveling westbound on I-40 should take I-26 west to Johnson City, Tenn., and then take I-81 south back to I-40, east of Knoxville.

Eastbound motorists will reverse the detour.

Message boards alerting motorists to the road closure have been in place since shortly before noon on Tuesday.
