PICS: More Than 50 Dogs Rescued From Suspected Puppy Mill

Posted: Updated:
The Rutherford Co. Sheriff's Office says they rescued more than 50 dogs from a suspected puppy mill.

The breeds included English bulldog, Yorkie, Cocker Spaniel, French bulldog and Shitzu. Deputies went to the original address on Ferry Road, Mooresboro and found more than 50 dogs on Monday.

When they went back to that location Wednesday with a search warrant, there were only 7 dogs left.

They say dogs were at different locations, 7 still at that original address, 7 somewhere in Cleveland County, 14 at a location in Forest City, and 20 or more at a location in Ellenboro.

The Humane Society says the dogs were in poor conditions and in need of medical care.

The sheriff's office says there are no charges filed yet. They will meet with the District Attorney to discuss it.

The Humane Society of the United States has a reward program to offer up to $5,000 for anyone who can provide info leading to an arrest and conviction of a puppy mill operator.

You can report a tip to 1-877-MILL-TIP.

The Humane Society says there are no specific North Carolina laws to protect dogs sold directly to the public or online by commercial breeding facilities. Law enforcement officers, therefore, are unable to prevent neglect until it reaches crisis proportions.

They say North Carolina has become a haven for some of the worst puppy mill operators in the country.
