Elijah Wilson was found guilty of assault and battery and kidnapping from an incident that happened at a Greenville birthday party in April 2013.

He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Brittany Irby was acquitted of her charges.

Officers were called to the West End Community Center on Vardry Street for a reported assault.

Investigators say when they arrived, the incident had moved to Allen Temple church, across the street.  20-year-old De'Bron Harrison, from Columbia, was found lying on the ground bleeding from the head. Harrison was taken to Greenville Memorial.

Deputy Coroner Barry Wright says De'Bron Aldrick Harrison had remained on life support since the incident.  Investigators say Harrison died due to blunt force trauma from being stomped on and beaten. Wright says Greenville Police have charged 6 teenagers in the homicide case.

Police investigators say Harrison was attending a birthday party with several friends and officers say there were also parents at the event. A fight happened when one of the suspects punched two girls at the party and parents asked he and the other suspects to leave.

Investigators say the suspects pretended to leave but came back and began another argument with one of the girls at the party. Harrison tried to break the argument but the suspects turned on him and chased him into the church parking lot.

Investigators say everyone left the scene but they were able to track down 6 suspects and arrest them for this crime. It's something officers say happens a lot but not to this extent.

" Its not typical we see someone beat up this severely but we do see a lot of fights that amount from something being said wrong or someone trying to help someone else," said Jonathan Bragg at Greenville Police.

Greenville Police have released the names of those charged as adults:

18-year-old Ronald Earl Brown is charged with assault and battery, assault and battery by mob, first degree, and kidnapping.

The names of the juveniles will not be released.

Neighbors in the went end of Greenville say this is extremely rare for their part of town and are surprised to hear about the death.

"Oh no you don't ever see anything like that here," said Michael Seaborn who lives nearby.

Ywanda Williams is a Greenville mom and works with Think Twice, a local group that works to stop violence in the Upstate.  She says this happens all too often and she fights a battle to keep her teenage kids safe daily.

"Sometimes you have to almost shadow what goes on even if its your own event," said Williams. She speaks about stories she's heard where a small disagreement between friends escalated to a murder.

She says it's important for students to do all they can to make friends who avoid dangerous situations.

"It's difficult though because I know a lot of parents doing their best to keep their kids safe and even students who don't go asking for trouble, but get involved in something that could hurt them," said Williams.
