RALEIGH, N.C. -

Food Lion donated hundreds of bags of food to Raleigh families Friday as part of an initiative to fight hunger.

Food Lion gave 500 bags of food to the Central and Eastern Food Bank of North Carolina in an effort to reach its goal of donating 1 million meals in 5 days across America.

Families picked up their bags at the Mount Peace Baptist Church in southeast Raleigh. Food Bank Director Peter Werbicki referred to the area as being "basically a food dessert" where 570,000 people live in poverty.

"People aren't able to get access to food whether it's for financial reasons or a lack of stores for them to get to," Werbicki said.

Each bag was filled with food for several meals, including fresh fruits and vegetables. Recipes for how to use the provided ingredients were also in each bag.
