Bob McCaffrey arrested & charged in connection with Gayle's disappearance

Posted: Updated:
MT. PLEASANT, SC - Bob McCaffrey was arrested Saturday in Mt. Pleasant in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Gayle.

McCaffrey was arrested without incident in the BiLo parking lot around 3:15pm and charged with obstruction of justice, according to Eric Watson with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. The arrest is part of the 2 year investigation into the disappearance of Gayle McCaffrey.
Gayle McCaffrey was reported missing from her home by her husband, Robert (Bob) McCaffrey on March 18th, 2012. McCaffrey told deputies that he last saw Gayle on March 17th, 2012 around 7:45 p.m. when she was lying on their bed and he claimed to have left the residence at 10:00p.m. to drive to Easley, SC.

Mrs. McCaffrey has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of her disappearance, Bob McCaffrey also presented deputies with a typed note that he claimed Gayle wrote upon discovering a safe with $110,000 cash and a handgun. He told deputies she found the combination to his safe, which was listed in his cell phone contacts.

According to court papers, investigators determined those were false statements. Documents say Gayle McCaffrey was not lying in her bed at 7:45 because other family members say she was having dinner with them at that time. Also, detectives said McCaffrey didn't disclose that he was actually going to Easley to see a woman, who detectives label as his paramour.

Detectives also said they found no safe combination in McCaffrey's phone, no safe (estimated by McCaffrey to weigh 350lbs) in the house and no indication a safe was ever imprinted on the home's carpet.

In bond court Sunday morning Gayle's sisters, Helen Banach and Debbie Pearson, told News 2 they never believed any of those statements to be the truth. They insist they are convinced she would never voluntarily leave her children.

The children are now 13-years-old and 7-years-old in the custody of Gayle's sister, Debbie Pearson. She said they told the children about the arrest Sunday morning and the kids are sad and confused.

Her other sister, Banach said, they are ready for the full story to come from McCaffrey. "Even if it's going to hurt them more, they deserve to know because I think somewhere in the back of their minds they still harbor an idea that maybe she'll come back and life will be the same again and they shouldn't have to live like that for a long time."

In court, Pearson and Banach said she carried the finances in the home, they claimed Mr. McCaffrey rarely held a steady job and they said if he is released he could easily relocate.

"Our hope now is we can find where she is," Banach said. "We want him to tell, that's the only thing we want, we want him to tell police where she is so we can bring her home and bury her."

The judge gave McCaffrey a $100,000 surety bond and ordered him to surrender his passport to his attorney.

Sheriff Al Cannon previously told News 2 that Bob McCaffrey was a suspect in his wife's homicide.

Major Watson could not comment on whether there would be addition charges, but this continues to be an active investigation.
Bob McCaffrey is being lodged in the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. In court, his attorney said McCaffrey has been living in North Carolina, where he was supposed to start a new job this week. The attorney said he's always been willing to cooperate with the investigation.

Anyone who may have information in this case is asked to contact the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at 843-202-1700 or crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
