Spartanburg Problem Motel To Be Demolished

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -

Work to take down the Sunshine Inn in Spartanburg will begin almost immediately now that city council has awarded a contract.

The city said the motel had become a problem for law enforcement and code enforcers in recent years.

Councilwoman Erica Brown said drugs and prostitution were a problem there.

"Creating safety is a number one priority," Brown said. "The idea is to try to connect to Wofford on the northside and create a cohesive area so that everyone can enjoy it."

With the building gone, it opens the opportunity to create a gateway to the city's northside.

The city will pay a little more than $100,000 for the demolition.

The Northside Development Corp., a nonprofit focused on improving the area, actually bought the inn from private funds.

Money is an issue for the city when it comes to blighted property. But council did just increase its budget for demolishing condemned homes.

It also plans to put pressure on property owners who are not complying with the city code.
