Parents: Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?

Posted: Updated:
UPSTATE, S.C. -

Like many family rides, Daniel Mancuso's is filled with car seats, and right now, just one kid. His 7 month old twins and their car seats didn't make Wednesday's trip.

"They were both recalled due to the latches," said Mancuso.

His two car seats are among nearly two million infant car seats just recalled by Graco because of issues with the buckles.

Manager of Safe Kids Upstate, Cynthia Fryer, says keeping tabs on recalls is a must. It's something they monitor daily to have ready for their six safety inspection stations across the Upstate, where they'll check your car seat for free.

Fryer says many good parents make common mistakes.

"The first issue they usually see is that unfortunately it's installed incorrectly," said Fryer. "You don't want it to move more than an inch to the left or to the right, front or back."

Fryer says parents also need to check the seat's expiration date. They're only good for six years.

And she doesn't recommend hand me downs because you may not know the history of the car seat. One wreck can cause hidden damage that could put your child in serious danger.

"Once the integrity is actually compromised, the next time there's a crash, the seat could actually fail at the belt path and so it won't hold in place," said Fryer. "It could actually break loose."

It's information even the most experienced parents can use, for themselves or for others.

"There are lots of babies that I see in their car seats in the grocery store or whatnot and they're not quite buckled in securely enough," said mom of five, Evie Jennings. "And that worries me."

"Our children are everything," said Mancuso.

The Graco recall involves nearly two million infant car seats manufactured between July 2010 and May 2013. Graco will send you a replacement harness buckle for free. The company says it is safe to use the car seat while you're waiting for the replacement.
