Nazi shipwreck found off the coast of Texas

Posted: Updated:

On the floor of the Gulf of Mexico sits a Nazi ship of ghosts, a sunken U-boat that up until now most Americans didn't know about. The ship had 52 crewmen who died.

The Nautilus used robot cameras to locate the shipwreck that is quite a find even to amateur historians and World War II movie buffs.  The shipwreck shows how close the World War II came to the shores of Texas.

Shipwreck diver Richie Kohler said, "The United States government didn't want us to know. They didn't want us to know how Germany was taking us to task, how successful these U-boats were."

For almost two weeks, Robert Ballard, the underwater explorer who discovered the Titanic, has been searching shipwrecks that U-boats left behind along our Gulf Coast.

"Hitler brought the war to our doorstep shortly after they declared war on us, so this was something that most American people do not realize: How close the war came, and how threatening it was," Ballard said. "They were extremely successful."

Experts say Adolph Hitler's U-boats sank thousands of Allied ships, mostly in the North Atlantic, and about 50 American ships in the Gulf.
