Local Hospitals Rank Among Nation's Best

Some local hospitals have bragging rights as the nation's best. Some local hospitals have bragging rights as the nation's best.

A hospital in North Carolina ranks among the nation’s best overall medical facilities in a report by U.S. News & World Report.

Duke University Hospital came in fourteenth on this list which ranked hospitals on skill and a variety of medical specialties including treatment of diabetes, neurology, orthopedics, cardiology and gynecology. 144 different hospitals had at least one specialty out of the 5,000 centers evaluated.

Many hospitals across the area did make the grade when it comes to specializing in treatment of certain diseases. The following is a summary of hospitals that made the nation’s top fifty list along and the categories they qualified in.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical, Duke University Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and the University of North Carolina Hospitals are amongst the nation’s top fifty hospitals in treating cancer.

In terms of cardiology and heart surgery, Duke University Hospital came fourth in the nation, along with Emory University Hospital (16), and the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon came in forty-fifth in the nation.

The hospitals that had a national ranking for diabetes and endocrinology include Duke University Hospital and Emory University Hospital.

Hospitals specializing in Ear, Nose, and Throat include Emory University Hospital, the University of North Carolina Hospitals, and Wake Forest Baptist Medical.

Emory University Hospital and Duke University Hospital are both ranked in the specialty of Gastroenterology and GI Surgery.

Emory Woods Geriatric Hospital in Atlanta made the grade in the specialty of Geriatrics as Duke University Medical and Emory University Hospital are in the nation’s top fifty for gynecology.

Amongst the nation’s leaders for nephrology includes Duke University Hospital, Wake Forest Baptist Medical, and Emory University Hospital.

For neurology and neurosurgery, Emory University Hospital and Duke University Hospital are amongst the nation’s best for that category.

In terms of orthopedics and pulmonology, Duke University Hospital is the best hospital in the area with Wake Forest Baptist Medical also making the list for pulmonology.

In urology, Duke University Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and the Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte rank amongst the nation’s best.
