NEWBERRY, S.C. -

A teenager has died in Newberry County after an ATV accident on Wednesday night in which the coroner says the teen wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Brandon Michael Austin of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, suffered extensive head injuries after running off of a roadway and falling down an embankment, according to the Newberry County Coroner.

Austin had a friend riding with him who was not injured. The coroner also says that Austin died instantly on scene.

“This is a tragic loss of life for this young man,” said Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton, “our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

An autopsy is scheduled for 8:30 am on Thursday morning.
