MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- (WCBD-TV) A Lowcountry doctor is facing nine counts of ill treatment of animals today, after Mount Pleasant Police say he left nine dogs inside his hot car as he worked at East Cooper Medical Center (ECMC) Monday.

According to the affidavit dated August 12th, Charles A. Bickerstaff, of Charleston, went to the Mount Pleasant Emergency Vet on Johnnie Dodd's Blvd Monday evening, with what staff members there believed to be six dead dogs in carriers in the back of a man's SUV.

Staff members at the emergency clinic believed the dogs died as a result of ill treatment, and detectives used information from staff at the clinic to  identify Bickerstaff through employment records at ECMC.

Detectives called Bickerstaff in for questioning at around 6 p.m. Monday, and he admitted to loading what turned out to be nine dogs, into five animal carriers into his SUV, driving to work, and leaving them inside the vehicle while he performed rounds at the hospital.

The affidavit says during the time he was at the hospital the temperatures outside ranged from 73 degrees to 82 degrees, with a heat index of almost 91 degrees. Police say, Bickerstaff left the dogs in the vehicle for three hours.

Mount Pleasant police arrested Bickerstaff Wednesday, and he is scheduled to face a judge for the first time at 10:00 a.m.
