(WSPA) – Strong storms have left one person dead, toppled trees, and damaged several homes in the Upstate.
The Union County coroner said J.C. Matthews Jr. died Monday evening when a heavy storm overturned his mobile home in Whitmire. The 65-year-old man lived on Eaves Road.
Sheriff David Taylor said Matthews’ home flipped multiple times.
The coroner said Matthews’ brother saw the trailer overturn and went to help – speaking to the victim and calling for emergency personnel.
Crews had a difficult time getting to the scene because so many trees were toppled in the storm.
Sheriff Taylor says they have asked the National Weather Service to confirm if a tornado came through the area.
The National Weather Service reported that a tornado possibly touched down in neighboring Laurens County.
Joey Avery, director of Laurens County Emergency Management, says crews saw evidence of a possible tornado touchdown on Lakeview near Highway 14. Trees were downed in the area and Avery says emergency management crews are helping homeowners as much as they can.
Avery says they won’t be able to classify it as a tornado for certain until National Weather Service officials visit the scene.PICTURE of Storm Damage in the Upstate
The NWS plans to survey Laurens, Pickens and Union counties to see if tornadoes went through the areas.
