1-year-old dies in car fire following chase, driver charged

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A one-year-old girl was killed in a vehicle fire Friday night in Spartanburg County following a car chase.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers attempted a traffic stop at about 10:20 p.m. after noticing a vehicle was traveling 67 mph in a 40 mph zone pm Highway 14 near Concourse Way in Greenville County.

The driver of the car did not stop and continued on Highway 14 then entered Interstate 85 near the 56 mile marker, according to troopers.

Troopers said they noticed sparks and smoke coming from underneath of the vehicle and asked dispatch to alert an area fire department.

At mile marker 58, troopers said they saw a large bag being thrown from the car.

The car became fully engulfed in flames at about the 60 mile marker and the driver slowed the car to about 30 mph, troopers said.

After the vehicle rolled to a stop, the driver, Imhotep Osiris Norman, 26, of Spartanburg, jumped out of the car and ran away.

Troopers and a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit attempted to located Norman but were unsuccessful.

Firefighters arrived on-scene and extinguished the fire.

After the fire was out, troopers discovered a body was in the back seat of the car, according to SCHP. SLED was called to the scene to investigate.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene at about 10:50 p.m. The coroner’s office identified the body to be Xena Rah’Lah Norman, 1, of Spartanburg.

Troopers located the bag that was thrown from the car. They said it contained illegal drugs.

Troopers were able to eventually locate and arrest Norman. He is being charged with homicide by child abuse and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center without bond.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s office will be performing an autopsy on Xena Norman.

South Carolina Highway Patrol, SLED and the coroner’s Office will continue to investigate.
