SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – District Five Schools of Spartanburg County officials said a 10-year-old student was removed from an Upstate school on Tuesday after learning that they had brought a BB gun to school.

According to a District Five news release, a bus driver notified the district’s public safety team after hearing rumors that a Beech Springs Intermediate School student had brought a gun to school.

“Law enforcement was immediately notified and searched the home of the student involved,” school officials said. “It was determined the 10 year old student did bring a BB gun to school in their bookbag. Officers discovered the gun was not loaded.”

School officials said the student was removed from campus and a disciplinary hearing is pending.

School administrators have also contacted Beech Springs parents to let them know of the incident.

“While unfortunate, this is a reminder of the importance of students doing the right thing and reporting the presence of weapons or suspected violence on campus. We want to commend the students who did that in this case. As always, safety is our top priority in District Five, and we will continue to work to make sure our campuses are safe for all students and staff,” officials said.
