105-year-old Chicago Cubs fan celebrates World Series victory

EAST MOLINE, Ill (KWQC) – We first introduced the Quad Cities to Ray Styrlund last week, when the 105-year-old stayed up late to listen to the Chicago Cubs win the NLCS.

Wednesday night, Styrlund listened to his beloved Cubbies on the radio, just like he always does.

“I talked to him last night after the third inning and you know just to hear how thrilled he was and how happy he was made it so worthwhile,” said his granddaughter-in-law Lynn Bjork. She and Ray are the only two Cubs fans in their family.

“When they tied it, I thought here we go again, another 100 years,” Styrlund said with his signature chuckle.

Once the tarp rolled out when the game went to extra innings, Styrlund thought the rain delay would take hours.

“It was tied and then it started to rain. They brought the tarp I thought, ‘boy they wont finish tonight,’” he said.

And, after 105 years of waiting, what’s another night… Right?

“I thought they’d finish today so I went to bed,” Styrlund said.

Which may make the day after celebration that much sweeter.

When asked what he would say to the Cubs,

“Congratulations, I’ve been waiting a lifetime for ya,” Ray quickly answered.
