2 accused of child abuse in Laurens

LAURENS, SC (WSPA) – Police have arrested a second person in a child abuse case in Laurens.

Officers responded to a report at Laurens County Memorial Hospital of two toddlers who had possibly been abused.

Major Chrissie Cofield with Laurens Police Department said in a statement that investigators learned two 13-month-old children had severe bruises, cuts and swelling. One child also suffered a skull fracture. 

The two toddlers are in stable condition.

The mother, Aliyah Stewart, 17, was arrested and charged with two counts each of unlawful conduct towards a child and infliction of great bodily injury upon a child.

Police say Randy Burnside Jr. turned himself in Tuesday morning.

Burnside was wanted on two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child and two counts of infliction of great bodily injury upon a child. He’s also wanted for resisting arrest in an unrelated incident. 

Laurens police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
