SPARTANBURG Co., S.C. (WSPA) — Two people have been charged in the death of a 57-year-old man killed Saturday.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the victim, Lanham Wood, was violently attacked and stabbed multiple times.
Roy Gene Sutherland, 34, and Amy Loftis Berridge, 35, are each charged with murder in Wood’s death.
Sheriff Wright announced their arrests Tuesday at a news conference.
According to a report, the homicide took place at a home in the 200 block of Cedar Springs Road in Spartanburg.
After the attack, Wood went to a neighbor’s home for help. The neighbor called 911, but Wood later died from his injuries at Spartanburg Medical Center.
Sutherland and Berridge were arrested Tuesday morning. Both are in the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Along with murder, they’re charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Berridge faces other charges.
The motive for the killing was unclear, but Sheriff Wright doesn’t think it was robbery.
“We are praying for the Wood family and I’m really thankful our team was able to get the job completed on this,” Wright said. He added the suspects had “a record with enough paper you can wrap Christmas presents with, but yet, they’re out of jail.”
Sheriff Wright also vowed to make the coming year “miserable” for drug users committing crimes in the community.
“You are going to do better in 2018 because there are so many victims out here… You’re harassing (residents) and you’re not going to feed off them like bottom dwellers anymore…So you better get prepared because I sure am.”
