4 dead, 3 hurt in Asheville shooting

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – Police say four people are dead, including the suspect and two teenagers, and three children were hurt in an Asheville shooting.

On Wednesday night, officers responded to reports of multiple shooting victims at a home on Hansel Avenue.

The Asheville Police Department says Erica Nichelle Smith, 32, died at the scene.

Two more victims, including a 15-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl, later died at Mission Hospital.

Police did not release the teens’ names.

Three children between the ages of 8 and 12 were also wounded.

Police say those victims are in stable condition.

Buncombe County Schools says a student who recently transferred from Asheville Middle was hurt.

They say the students from Asheville City School who passed away are know to some of the current students.

Crisis teams and grief counselors have been sent to all schools impacted by the shooting and they encourage those struggling with the event to reach out to their school counselor.

Police say the suspect, identified as Maurice Laron Garner, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the hospital.

Investigators say Garner and Smith had argued earlier Wednesday.
