Arrest records show detectives believe four members of a South Carolina family were beaten to death in a home.
It happened around 11:30 a.m. Saturday at 2751 Atlanta Drive in Mt. Pleasant.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office said the victims found in a home near Mount Pleasant ranged in age from 15 to 72.
The four appeared to have died of blunt-force trauma.
The victims are identified as Joseph Manigault, 72, from Mt. Pleasant. Rose Manigault, 69, from Mt. Pleasant. Kenya Manigault, 42, from Mt. Pleasant. Faith Manigault, 15, from Mt. Pleasant was also a student at Wando High School.
22-year-old Lovequawn Matthew Shaire Scott is a relative of the victims and is charged with four counts of murder.
Deputies say they detained Scott at the home with blood on his clothing, and an injury to his hand.
More than 50 family and friends of the dead gathered in a courtroom Sunday, but the man accused of the killings refused to make a first court appearance.
Officials have not discussed a possible motive for the crime.
The following is a statement from Dr. Sherry Eppelsheimer, Principal at Wando High School:
I cannot begin to try to explain how hard this is for all of us to comprehend. A precious soul and wonderful person is no longer with us. We were so fortunate to have Faith Manigault as part of our school community, and now we are struggling with the fact that we will not see her in our hallways and classrooms, or on the basketball court, anymore.
Of course, we are not only grieving the loss of Faith, but also the loss of her family, who also meant so much to us.
We ask that you respect the privacy of those who loved and knew Faith and her family, and respect the privacy of the Wando community during this difficult time.
Starting tomorrow, our school will have extra personnel in place, including members of the District’s Crisis Team, to help students and staff try to process this horrible situation.
