South Carolina Highway Patrol responded Wednesday to an accident involving multiple ambulances in Greenville County.
The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on I-85 near mile marker 51.
SCHP Trooper Jo Hovis said four ambulances had slowed for normal traffic when the fifth ambulance driver failed to slow and rear-ended the fourth ambulance, causing a chain reaction.
The driver of the fourth ambulance was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries, Hovis said.
Four of the ambulances had to be towed from the scene, according to Hovis.
Ambulance Service PIO Bjorn said the ambulances were “commonly controlled” from the North Dakota/Minnesota area and were headed to assist with the hurricane efforts.
According to Hovis, the ambulances were coming from Atlanta, Ga.
Bjorn said the ambulances did not have an exact location that they were headed to.
Hovis said the lanes have been reopened on I-85.
