PELZER, S.C. (WSPA) – South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to a crash at Fork Shoals Elementary Thursday afternoon.
According to SCHP’s website, the crash happened at about 2:44 p.m. on McKelvey Road near Fork Shoals Church Road and Turner Road.
Greenville County Schools Communication Director Beth Brotherton said a driver was in the student pickup line when he crashed into a pole.
Troopers said Michael Jeremy Penland was arrested and charged with second offense DUI and an open container charge.
No children were reported, according to Brotherton.
The Fork Shoals School Principal Kim Reid released the following statement to parents:
This is Principal Kim Reid from Fork Shoals School. Those of you who picked up your child in our car line this afternoon may have noticed that we had a traffic incident in front of the school. An adult who was here to pick up a student crashed their vehicle into a concrete post and was unable to move the truck forward or backward. We called law enforcement to assist us in moving the vehicle and investigating the driver’s behavior on campus before and after the collision. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has charged the driver with driving under the influence. Our staff members who were working the car line were alert, as always, and kept students away from traffic and the unsafe driving. We are thankful for their commitment to keeping children safe.
Penland is being held in the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office on $2,250 bond.
