ANDERSON (WSPA) An Anderson man faces a number of charges after police say he attacked a neighbor with a golf club and then barricaded himself inside his home.

Michael Berryman, 60, was charged with several crimes by Anderson Police after officers were called to West Fredricks Street around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say a man told them he was watering his lawn when Berryman attacked him with a golf club, striking him several times. A third person saw the assault and tried to break it up. That third man suffered some puncture marks.

The man who had been hit with a golf club refused medical treatment according to the incident report.

Anderson Police say Berryman ran into his home in the 400 block of West Fredricks Street and barricaded himself in the house.

Berryman refused to leave the home which led Anderson Police to call the SWAT team and a negotiator. After several hours of failed negotiations, the SWAT team used gas to try and get inside the home.

The incident report states officers went into the home and found Berryman hiding in the attic. He was taken to a hospital for treatment by EMS before being released to police who took him to jail.

Berryman is being held on charges that include assault and battery first degree and breach of peace. He’s expected to appear before a judge Wednesday evening.
