TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Just because kids are on summer break, doesn’t mean they have to take a break from learning. What they learn when school’s out can help them when the new year begins.
8 On Your Side found there are plenty of educational apps, which is convenient because a lot of kids are already spending a lot of time on smartphones and tablets.
“I really like the Sago Mini Road Trip app because if you are going to go on a road trip with a preschooler, this is a great way for them to kind of practice a little bit and see what they’re going to do,” said Sara DeWitt, PBS Kids Digital.
DeWitt also believes some apps can encourage kids to get outside.
“For example, the Ready Jet Go Space Explorer app is a great way to kind of learn a little bit of the constellations. Kids can move that tablet or phone around in the night sky and see where the constellations are and learn about them,” she said. “This is a great thing to then prompt a star-gazing trip or a camping trip.”
For older kids, there’s everything from language learning apps to games that can help with them with math.
When educational apps are fun, kids may not realize they’re learning.
“The app TeleStory, lets kids record their own video newscast. So walks them through how to do a story. It’s using the camera on the app so kids can record themselves, but they also can put funny filters on,” she said.
