Richard Sales, chief of Reynolds Volunteer Fire Department in Asheville, died Sunday morning in a wreck on Interstate 40 in Iredell County.

Chief Sales was on his way to accept an award on behalf of the fire station at the time of the crash.

Sales was just the second chief in the fire department’s history.

There will be a procession at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday from Baptist Hospital in Wake Forest escorted by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department along I-40 to Anders Rice Funeral Home in Asheville.

The fire department said in a Facebook post that services for Chief Sales will be held at Biltmore Church on Clayton Road in Arden.

The visitation is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 12 and the funeral is expected to start at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13.

Chief Sales will be buried in the cemetery at Gashes Creek Baptist Church in Asheville following a procession from Biltmore Church to NC 191 north on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Highway 74 to Gashes Creek Road.

The community is encouraged to line the procession route to show their support and honor Chief Sales’ life.
