CLEMSON, SC (WSPA) – Clemson University officials confirmed in a news release Friday that the contract for Steve Smith, the men’s assistant basketball coach, was not renewed.

According to a Clemson release, Clemson Athletics did not renew Smith’s contract.

Smith’s contract with the university expired on April 30.

“I support the decision not to renew Steve Smith’s contract,” Clemson’s Head Basketball Coach Brad Brownell said.

On April 25, we reported that Clemson’s athletic department said they would be conducting a review after some of its sports programs were mentioned during a college basketball corruption trial.

Conversations recorded by a government wiretap in 2017 were played during the trial.

In the records, Smith could be heard talking with one person about how to lure former Spartanburg Day School star Zion Williamson to Clemson.

CBS Sports also reported another recording that included Smith making a reference to Clemson football.

Clemson officials said in statement at the time that they were aware of the developments in court and were taking the matter seriously.
