Teen arrested in deadly shooting in Union Co.

UNION Co., S.C. (WSPA) -- Deputies say a teen has been arrested in a deadly shooting in Union County.

The coroner said the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of Lockhart Highway.

The victim was identified as Christian Johnson, 19, of Union.

Deputies found Johnson lying in the roadway when they arrived on the scene.

They tried to perform emergency aid but were unsuccessful.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Dr. Utrena Johnson is Christian's mother. "As a joke, they felt it was funny to send that to Facebook wasn't enough that you killed my child, but you had to plaster it and put his dead body up like a trophy, I literally passed out," she said.

An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday morning.

Deputies say they talked to a man on the scene who said he was told Johnson tried to rob his son and his son shot him, according to the report.

He told deputies the gun was in the back of a pickup truck parked in the driveway.

The suspect, Chandler Stone Gatliff, told deputies he shot Johnson, according to the report.

He was arrested at the scene.

Gatlff, 19, of Lockhart Highway faces a murder charge.

Dr. Johnson says, "You'll have an opportunity to do so much more than my son will ever have the opportunity to do because you made a decision that his life valuable enough, that he wasn't important enough, pumping those bullets into my son, so to you, I forgive you."

She also had a message for other young people.

"Let's figure out how to get along a little better than always wanting to pull out a gun because you leave so much brokenness and so much hardship behind after your choices," Dr. Johnson said.

SLED is now investigating.
