GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – The coroner identified the man found dead at a Greenville law firm as attorney Richard “Dick” William James.

Employees of Dick James Law Firm, located on Rutherford Street, discovered James’ body just after 8 a.m. Monday when they arrived at work.

James, 81, was found by Greenville County EMS units with a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

James was pronounced dead around 8:20 a.m.

The manner of death has been ruled a suicide.

Dick James was a veteran criminal defense lawyer who practiced law in the Upstate area for more than 40 years. 

James was well-known for his television commercials that have aired for years where he became the face for the law firm he founded that specializes in criminal defense cases and personal injury trials.

The Gaffney native and graduate of the University of South Carolina’s School of Law’s biography on the law firm’s website lists his membership in the “Million Dollar Advocates Forum,” a prestigious group of trial lawyers who have won million and multi-million dollar lawsuits and settlements. 

Greenville City Police and the coroner’s office investigated James’ death.
