GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – An international hotel company announced Monday that it has given a large contribution to help fund the construction of a pedestrian bridge in Greenville’s Unity Park.
According to a news release, Auro Hotels announced a $500,000 contribution to help fund Auro Bridge, which will span the Reedy River in the center of the 60-acre park on the west side of the city.
The announcement was made during the grand opening of the dual-branded Residence Inn and SpringHill Suites Hotel on Washington Street in downtown Greenville.
“Auro Bridge will symbolize the bridge Greenville has extended to the minority communities,“ D.J. Rama, president and CEO of Auro Hotels, said. “It represents the reception my family has received from the Greenville community since making our home here in 1977.“
Greenville Mayor Knox White said they are grateful to the Rama’s for their support of the new park.
“This park will be a park for everyone, and I can’t think of a better way to express the importance and strength of Greenville’s diversity than by dedicating this bridge to the minority communities in Greenville,“ White said.
According to the release, Auro Hotels’ contribution is the second announced contribution to Unity Park, and is among nearly $3.5 million in sponsorships and $1.5 million in in-kind donations to date.
Fundraising for the park started in April of last year.
Groundbreaking for the park is set for the spring, with river restoration expected to start in fourth quarter.
According to the release, portions of Unity Park are expected to open in 2021.
