Its no surprise kids spend most of their time at school and now a new state effort is forming to improve students’ health while they’re there.
It’s a partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation and Schools in South Carolina.
Wellness Inspired School Environments (WISE SC) is a statewide effort and every school in SC is eligible to receive $2,000 – $8,000 in grants to fund a health and wellness focused project at school.
These grants will Help meet USDA guidelines. Funds must be tied to one or more of these six required modules including health education, physical education, nutrition services, promotions staff and community involvement.
Examples of funding are active desks, water refill stations, teacher food service training or healthy cooking in snack prep classes for students and parents.
Funds cannot be used for healthcare services or one time events, incentives or salaries.
Schools in South Carolina will be eligible to apply for the funds as determined by school size and federal title one status which is designated for schools within higher percentages of children from low income families. The grants will be awarded throughout the year on a rolling basis lasting for a maximum of 12 months. There’s only one grant available per school.
