HART COUNTY, G.A. (WSPA) – A man died and two people were injured following a boat crash Sunday afternoon in Lake Hartwell.

According to the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call about two boats crashed into each other near Carter’s Ferry Boat Ramp of Lake Hartwell around 1:50 p.m. The man who died was in the boat by himself at the time of the crash. He has been identified by the Hart County Coroner as 17-year-old Eric David Beasley of Canton.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the second boat had six people riding. Two of those six people were injured and taken to a hospital in Anderson County.

Deputies said the injuries of the two people did not appear to be life-threatening.

“The two boats collided in a T-bone kind of a blow,” said Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland.

The DNR Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating this crash. They said it could take six to eight weeks to complete.

Cleveland said boat occupants were interviewed, and both boats were towed in to be examined. He also said a blood alcohol test was given to the driver of the boat who survived the crash

“Right now, there is absolutely no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved in either party on the boats,” said Cleveland.

Cleveland said Sunday was one of the busiest days he has seen on the lake. With Memorial Day a week away, he urged everyone to be careful.

“We just ask folks to wear a life jacket, use courtesy, watch out for other boats, and let’s slow it down in heavy traffic.”
