LAKE HARTWELL (WSPA) – A boat exploded and caught fire on Lake Hartwell Sunday around 2:45 p.m., according to Corporal Craig Fulghum with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
They say it happened in the Long Point area off of Old Highway 29.
Five people were blown overboard: 2 men, 2 women and 1 child.
They say there were minor burns on most, but 1 woman had to be transported to be airlifted to Augusta.
They say the initial investigation is that a lack of ventilation was the issue.
Fulghum says it’s important that you have proper ventilation anytime you have an onboard boat, especially after you fuel up.
He says it’s crucial that turn your blower on 5 minutes before you fuel up and keep it on 5 minutes after to allow all the vapors to leave.
“If you don’t do that, those vapors are just sitting inside that compartment. If you have a loose battery terminal cable or some type of spark inside that engine compartment, it could be a spark plug, you have all the ingredients there for an explosion.”
