Buncombe County Commissioners held-off on naming a new Interim Manager.
This comes just hours after, former Manager Wanda Greene made her first federal court appearance after pleading not guilty to 23 counts of fraud and money laundering.
Chairman Brownie Newman tells 7News the county filed a lawsuit against Greene on Tuesday for $2.3 million dollars of taxpayer money she misappropriated.
“To procure insurance for her benefit and the benefit of others,” Newman said. “We believe that was done not only without board authorization, it was done illegally. So we have filed a civil lawsuit against Wanda Greene to recoup those funds, that we believe should be paid back by the county taxpayers.”
Mandy Stone took over for Greene following her retirement in 2017.
7News has learned following an investigation, it was uncovered Stone held one of the insurance policies.
Greene allegedly purchases whole insurance policies for herself, her son and 8 other county employees using taxpayer money.
