UPDATE: Haywood County Schools officials said Canton Middle School was cleared by law enforcement around 12:30 p.m. following a bomb threat earlier Monday morning.
“We are very thankful this was not a credible threat,” school officials said. “We want to thank everyone who assisted in securing the campus, evacuation procedures, and clearning the building. We could not effectively handle situations like this without our law enforcement and other great emergency response partners.”
School officials said students and staff members were returning to campus and that the school has made arrangements to make sure students eat lunch.
“We are shifting from a safety and security response to an investigation that will hopefully identify the perpetrator or perpetrators. We take threats to students and staff very seriously. We will continue to rely on our staff, training, and excellent community partners when addressing perceived threats.”
HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – Haywood County Schools officials said law enforcement has put up a perimeter around an area middle school after a threatening message was found written on a restroom wall at the school.
According to the school system’s website, Canton Middle School officials learned of a bomb threat that was written on a restroom wall at the school.
Students were safely re-located to the stadium near the school and law enforcement officers were sweeping the campus.
Haywood County Schools officials said there are no indications that the bomb threat is credible at this time, and said the school will return to a regular schedule when the campus is cleared
The perimeter set up around the school is for safety purposes, and all unauthorized individuals are asked to stay off campus until the campus has been cleared.
According to the school system, any parents who try to pick up their students may experience a delay due to the safety precautions currently in place.
