Cedar Grove Elementary welcomes students back to class

ANDERSON Co., S.C. (WSPA) — It’s the first day of school for students across the Carolinas.

7 News paid a visit to Cedar Grove Elementary as administration welcomed new students with a unique method of teaching.

Principal Kristie Finley said Cedar Grove is one of several schools that use teaching methods based on the Ron Clark Academy in southeast Atlanta.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students are assigned to one of four houses on the first day of school alongside other Kindergarten through fifth grade students.

Teachers said they try to incorporate music, movement and repetition to reinforce lessons.

District representatives said the school had been implementing the method for about 5 years and has noticed improvements in students behavior and participation.

At the end of the school year Assistant Principal Matt White said an overall winning house is named as well as winners every nine weeks.
