SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified a man who died following a shooting Thursday in Chesnee.

According to Coroner Rusty Clevenger, Jeffery Tyler Cartee, 25, of Chesnee, died Friday just before 1 p.m. at Spartanburg Medical Center after he was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office officials said deputies responded to a home on Bill Lattimore Road in Chesnee Thursday morning in regards to a shooting.

When deputies arrived on-scene,  they found Cartee with a gunshot wound to the head, and, due to the extent of his injuries, he was flown to Spartanburg Medical Center for treatment.

According to a news release, three other people were at the home, including Cartee’s ex-girlfriend, her father and his ex’s current boyfriend.

They told deputies that Cartee came to the home agitated and demanding to get inside the home, and no one responded to him.

Cartee then forced his way into the home and was then asked to leave by the female, but he refused.

The woman’s boyfriend asked him to leave, but Cartee reportedly refused again and a fight began between the two men.

Cartee then allegedly grabbed a gun inside the home and the woman’s boyfriend tried to wrestle the gun away from Cartee, but the gun went off and hit Cartee in the head.

“Our violent crime investigators discussed their preliminary findings with the Solicitor’s Office yesterday afternoon, who advised that no criminal charges should be filed at this time,” Lt. Kevin Bobo said. “Our investigation continues, and any additional information will be released at the appropriate time.”

Clevenger said Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office investigators and the coroner’s office is investigating the shooting.
