LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A child was hit by a vehicle Friday morning near an elementary school in Laurens County.

According to Laurens County School District 55, a student from Ford Elementary School crossed Highway 221, also known as Lucas Avenue, at 7:11 a.m. when they were hit by a vehicle.

Troopers said the 7-year-old boy was in the crosswalk when he was hit by a 2008 Medeza sedan traveling north on Highway 221.

The student was flown to the hospital in serious condition.

Laurens County School District 55 also released the following statement:

Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) prioritizes the safety of students, staff, and
community members. Procedures are in place for the safety of students and staff throughout the
school day and during arrival and dismissal. LCSD 55 has a partnership with the Laurens County
Sheriff’s Office, which provides crossing guards at school sites with walkers starting at 7:15 AM
and 2:50 PM. Each school has assigned staff members to monitor and assist students at car rider
lines. Each school also has a designated School Resource Officer.
