ANDERSON CO., SC (WSPA) – The death of a 2-year-old child in Anderson County is under investigation.
Evelynn “Evie” died Saturday afternoon at Greenville Memorial Hospital after being taken off of life support, according to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.
The child was taken to AnMed Health Center the afternoon of April 17 before she was transferred to Greenville Memorial Hospital.
“I got notified Tuesday, when it happened,” said Daniel Leonhardt, the child’s father. “Her mom called me while I was at work and told me that she was laying down for a nap and she was being rushed to the hospital because she was unresponsive.”
The coroner says the child died from a traumatic brain injury and her death is being investigating by the Anderson County Child Death Investigation Task Force.
The task force consists of the sheriff’s office, coroner’s office and state Department of Social Services.
Deputies say they are investigating a case of child abuse that occurred in the county.
On Sunday, Daniel Leonhardt told 7News he wants answers about his daughter’s untimely death. “You don’t deal with this. This is not something you deal with. This is something that you live through,” he said.
Sheriff Chad McBride acknowledged public concern over the case. “We fully understand these concerns, but are determined to allow the investigative process to work its course and allow all of the facts to come to light,” McBride said.
“When a full investigation has been completed, we will certainly provide an update,” Sheriff McBride added. “Thank you for your understanding.”
The coroner says an autopsy will be performed after the girl’s organs are donated.
