Churches talk child safety after recent sexual assault allegation

TAYLORS (WSPA) – Police in Pickens are investigating a recent sexual assault involving a teenager that took place at a church.

Pickens Police say a teenager exposed himself to a girl at grace United Methodist Church. They also say he inappropriately touched a four-year old girl.

The pastor of the church has not returned our phone call regarding the investigation.

For parents, something like this is a terrible fear.

Many churches around the Upstate have strict policies on place before anyone can work with kids.

At Springwell Church in Taylors, anyone over the age of 18 must pass a background check and an application before getting to work in the children’s ministry.

Teenagers who wish to work in the ministry also fill out an application, but once on the job, someone is always watching.

The church uses the “buddy system” to make sure a child is never alone with a teenager or an adult.

The staff also keeps an eye out for any red flags that would indicate a potential threat to children.

Child safety is a top priority for churches, and they will do whatever it takes to make sure they are safe while on the property.
