City showcases 7 new affordable housing units in West Greenville

News

Greenville City leaders are showcasing the latest venture to expand affordable housing options during “National Community Development Week.”

West Greenville is flourishing with housing options that won’t break the bank.

One of those options is a modest family home, on Birnie St., that our 7News Crew got a tour of on Monday.

“So this is a 2 bedrooms house [and] 1 bath,” said Ginny Stroud, City of Greenville Community Development Manager.

Stroud says the house cost around $100,000 dollars.

She tells 7News the city partnered with Homes of Hope to build the house using federal grants that fund budget-friendly housing in metropolitan areas.

“So this home will be an affordable priced rental home and rented to a family that qualifies,” Stroud said.

The house will comfortably fit a family of 3 and cost around $600 dollars a month for rent.

The Birnie St. property is just one of more than 600 homes built over the last 40 years. It’s part of the city’s vision to expand affordable housing options.

“The biggest challenge for us is having the land to build housing on,” said Stroud.

Despite obstacles, the city acquired 7 properties recently. Including a piece of land on Kingview St. where a home, similar to others in the area, will be built.

Just a few blocks away, 3 affordable housing bungalows on Doe St. are nearing completion.

The other properties are located on Endel St.

Inez Morris, a proud tenant of an affordable housing unit, says reasonable housing in Greenville is becoming scarce.

She says the homes are both affordable and efficient, so renters also benefit from low utility bills.

Morris tells 7News there are many benefits to living in a mixed-income community.

“This community is a walkable community,” Morris told 7News. “We know our neighbors, so it makes it a community where everybody is coming together.”

“National Community Development Week” activities continue on Wednesday.

The city is hosting a groundbreaking for the Genesis home at 9 a.m. The project is a 2 cottage-style rental unit that will be built on Spartanburg St.
