CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WSPA) – Prepping for the winter storm paid off for one Cleveland County woman — in the amount of $100,000.

Barbara Branch, like so many others across the Carolinas, was getting ready for the upcoming storm and stopped into Earl’s Short Stop to get kerosene.

“I wanted to make sure I was ready in case the power went out,” Branch said. “When I went to pay, something just said to buy a lottery ticket.”

Branch purchased NC Education Lottery’s Big Money Playbook and after scratching off the tickets, realized she had won $100,000.

“I kept asking myself, ‘Is this for real?'” she said. “I had to have the clerk check it. When she told me to sign the back my hands were shaking. Most people just end up with bread and milk when they get ready for a storm. I can’t believe I ended up with $100,000.”

Branch claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Tuesday. After state and federal taxes were taken out, Branch took home $70,507, which she said she plans to use to fix up her home.

According to the NC Lottery release, the playbook was launched earlier this month, with the three top prizes of $1 million and four $100,000 prizes.
