Coroner identifies man killed after crash on I-26 in Spartanburg Co.


SPARTANBURG (WSPA) – One person is dead and another in the hospital after a crash on Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Thursday near Exit 19.

Authorities say a car driven by 20-year-old Jeffrey Hunter Nelmes of Spartanburg was traveling east on I-26, crossed into oncoming traffic and was struck by a van and another car.

Nelmes was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The driver of the van was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center for her injuries, according to troopers.

The driver of the third car was not injured.

Westbound lanes of I-26 were closed for around two and a half hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
