Cherokee County detectives are investigating a deadly shooting in Gaffney.
Investigators say Jerry Lee Scalf Jr., 27, was killed in the shooting on Coach Hill Drive Friday night.
On Saturday, deputies charged Diante Jeramine Willis, 22, with Scalf’s death.
“It shouldn’t have happened. There was no sense in it. He should still be here,” Heather Vinesett, Scalf’s sister, told 7News.
Vinesett says her mother’s home, on Coach Hill Drive, is the place her family gathers every chance they get. She says Friday night was no different.
However, their family time was cut short when gunfire erupted in front of the Gaffney home shortly after 9 p.m.
Investigators say Scalf was shot in the roadway and died at the scene.
According to Cherokee County detectives, Willis and Scalf were engaged in an argument when Willis pulled out a weapon and shot Scalf.
After a brief foot chase deputies were able to detain Willis.
The shooting was not a random act of violence according to detectives. However, investigators have yet to identify a motive.
Vinesett believes it’s because her brother tried to help out a friend that was having problems with Willis.
“Lee tried to talk to the boy and it just started from there and he’s been after Lee ever since,” she said. “And he finally got him last night.”
Investigators say Willis has a history of verbal confrontations and they believe Willis and Scalf had been in arguments before.
Vinesett says her family is heartbroken by the violence that took “Lee” away from them far too soon.
“Talk it out. Put the guns down. You ain’t got to use guns,” she told 7News.
Willis is charged with 1 count of murder. Investigators say he could face more charges.
Investigators are asking homeowners in the neighborhood to look out for the handgun used in the incident. Officials advise contacting 911 if it is found and do not attempt to move the weapon.
The Cherokee County Coroner tells 7News an autopsy will be performed on Sunday.
The sheriff’s office will continue to investigate the incident.
