Coroner ID’s man killed in crash on Asheville Hwy in Spartanburg Co.

SPARTANBURG Co., S.C. (WSPA) — South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a deadly crash on Asheville Highway.

According to highway patrol, the crash happened Wednesday night at the intersection of Asheville Highway at Commerce Pointe Boulevard near Ingles at around 8:50 p.m.

Troopers said a pickup truck hit a tractor trailer headed south across a westbound lane.

The pickup truck driver, a 69-year-old from Spartanburg, was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Joe Hovis said. 

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the driver as Willie Kirt Smith.

Clevenger said a toxicology and forensic exam are pending.

Hovis said the tractor trailer driver was not hurt in the wreck.

The crash is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
