SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office officials identified the suspect who was shot and killed by a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a confrontation Wednesday morning.
The incident happened at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday on Holly Springs Church Road near Inman.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the deputy responded to a call about a vehicle theft.
The victim told the responding deputy that the suspect pointed a gun at his face, Wright said.
Wright told us that the victim’s wife called 911 as he was being held at gunpoint. The suspect didn’t fire his gun.
“This guy got woke up early this morning with a gun pointed in his face… I was proud of him because he didn’t shoot the bad guy too. He was just like, ‘Here take my truck,’” Wright said.
The suspect presented a gun when confronted by the officer and shots were fired, according to Wright.
He later confirmed that the suspect died.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the suspect as David Marcus Reece, 47, of Inman.
The deputy was not hurt.
“He’s fine,” Wright said of the deputy. “Thank you Jesus, he is fine.”
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents are investigating the shooting.
SLED spokesperson Thom Berry said Wednesday’s officer-involved shooting marks the 22nd officer-involved shooting in 2019.
