WOODRUFF, S.C. (WSPA) – A woman was found dead in a burned vehicle Sunday in Woodruff.

The Woodruff Police Department said they responded to Cavins Road and East Hayne Street to assist with a vehicle fire.

When they arrived, officers said they discovered a woman dead inside the vehicle.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Sheri Knox, 61, of Roebuck.

The coroner’s office said Knox’s death appeared to be accidental in nature. Woodruff Police said they believe Knox pulled the vehicle over to the shoulder and went to sleep with it running.

Investigators believe dry grass beneath the vehicle caught fire, which later ignited the vehicle.

Police said Knox likely died from smoke inhalation.
