Corrections officer accused of assaulting inmate at Tyger River Correctional

SPARTANBURG CO., SC (WSPA) – A correctional officer at Tyger River Correctional Institution has been charged after being accused of using excessive force against an inmate.

According to the South Carolina Department of Corrections Police Services, 38-year-old Vasiliy Chernyak, Jr. of Greer is charged with third degree assault of an inmate and misconduct in office.

According to warrants, Chernyak caused wounds to the left eye and face of an inmate using “chemical munitions.”

The incident happened at the prison in Spartanburg County on May 14, warrants say.

Chernyak is being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
